It’s time to stop thinking of fashion in terms of the 10 Commandments, and start thinking in terms of the Golden Rule. As “It’s not about should I wear it, it’s about, does it look flattering on me?” With that in mind, read on for expert advice on how to break fashion’s outdated laws skilfully and make your look work for you. Because, “for every rule about style, there’s an exception.”
1. Mixing prints and patterns is not only acceptable — it’s supremely on-trend.
2. You can (nay, SHOULD) wear sequins for daytime.
3. Wear horizontal stripes. Forget about them making you look “wide.”
4. Another fashion rule to break tomorrow? Wear red and pink together. Or “colour block,” as fashion people say.
5. Less is more is another bogus rule — more is more! Instead of taking one thing off before you leave the house, put one thing on.
6. Also combine: black and navy (or brown). Revel in black skirts with navy tees, black dresses with brown boots, and many other versions of this sacrilege.
7. Your shoes don’t have to match your bag and belt. Mixing up your accessories adds interest to an outfit, and can make you look much more modern and polished – mix personality-driven shoes, with fairly classic bags.
